Description:

Since the Middle Ages, small organs and sets of bells have been combined with complex clockwork mechanisms to perform music automatically. During the 18th century—a period that celebrated science, invention, and technological achievement—mechanicians, the builders of mechanical musical instruments, were held in high regard.

Frederick the Great's fascination with mechanical instruments inspired C.P.E. Bach, W.F. Bach, and Quantz to compose works for the automatic organ. Handel also wrote music for musical automatons, and Mozart's father, together with the court organist Eberlin, composed pieces for a roller organ at Salzburg Fortress.

Join us on Wednesday, July 15, at 12:15 p.m. as Craig Hanson performs selections of music originally composed for mechanical organs, presented on our beautiful Noack tracker organ. The concert will be held in the sanctuary, and admission is free. Bring a friend!
